I run two different types of businesses. I do freelance work, as is obvious from this site. Usually, I’m either consulting with clients or migrating old static sites to WordPress, or helping someone with their search engine optimization. I’m also a wedding officiant, which means I stand in front of couples, ask them if “they do”, say some hopefully inspiring words, and eventually pronounce them a legally wedded couple. Each of those businesses are pretty vastly different from one another, but the one thing they have in common is the contract. Every client, of whatever sort, needs to sign a contract. Getting that signature is one of the most annoying and difficult parts of any part of the process.
Clients Rarely Have Access To Scanners Or Fax Machines Or Sometimes Even Printers
In today’s world, we expect everything to be instant. But some processes have remained woefully ancient in their approach, unless we were willing to fork out substantial money. I’m generally not the kind of person who is willing to do that, by the way. So, I’ve constantly dealt with the problem of helping clients figure out how to print out a contract I’ve emailed to them, sign it, scan it back into their computer, and email it back to me. Even if the client has a printer that scans, it can take an hour or so of instruction to get them to understand how it works – if it even works at all. This should not be a part of the process.
What About All Those Online Document Signing Places?
Yes, there are online document signing solutions, such as Adobe Sign, Docusign, Hellosign, Citrix, and more, but generally, they are either costly or confusing, and usually requiring that thing I dislike so much – the monthly fee. (And don’t even get me started on the monthly fees PER USER!)
And then there’s the whole PDF thing. PDFs really annoy me. I’m not even sure why. They just do. Is that just me? Do PDFs annoy anyone else? I don’t know, but I’m guessing maybe. But I digress.
And Then WP E-Signature Fell Into My Lap
Really, it did. As I mentioned recently in my post, It’s Raining WordPress Stuff, I won some amazing WordPress products, and ApproveMe’s WP E-Signature was one of the products I won. As it turn out, this plugin is going to change my life, seriously. It’s a small thing, sure, this whole client signing process, but it’s a huge aggravation that will now be a thing of the past. Yay!
Had Me Worried For A Bit
The install process bugged out on me for a bit there, because my memory wasn’t set high enough, but the good folks at ApproveMe quickly showed me how to get past the problem. If you have any issues installing this mighty little plugin, just get in touch with their support, and they’ll get you moving right along again.
Frankly, It Rocks
I started out by putting my wedding client contract on my wedding site, because this is my biggest pain point. Couples in love really don’t want to get into techy stuff. So, if I could solve that problem, it would be a big win! The process is so smooth, it made me giggle.
Since both parties getting married need to sign the contract, WP E-Signature makes that a breeze. I just input both of their names and email addresses, and the contract gets sent off to them. Each one clicks a button to sign, and then either signs with their mouse, or signs by typing their name and then choosing a nice signature-style font that they like. Submit, and done. Everyone gets a copy of the fully-signed document, and I get a permanent copy stored in my Dropbox. Oh, and I get notified immediately whenever they sign.
Bells Are Ringing, Feet Are Dancing
If you’re a developer, please make cool things like this. This is what makes users happy. If you’re just someone who is as tired as I was of dealing with the whole contract signing process, give WP E-Signature a try. There’s nothing in this for me, by the way. I’m not an affiliate. I’m just excited about this plugin.

“We consulted with hundreds of WordPress site owners while developing WP E-Signature. We really wanted to make sure we got it right” said Kevin Michael Gray, CEO of ApproveMe. “Originally we set out to make a ‘one size fits all’ document signing plugin but found out very quickly people wanted to customize E-Signature. Some needed to automate Terms of Service agreements; others wanted Dropbox Sync and auto-responder email automations. So with six months of development behind us we decided to literally start from scratch and put the power of signing documents back in the hands of small business owners.”
Here are a couple of videos you might want to watch. The first is short, the second is not, but both will give you a good idea of what this is all about. Hope this helps some of you get rid of this particular annoyance in your business processes!
WP E-Signature is a winner.
