You should be focused on you, your subject matter, the quality of your content, your users, their needs, and the connection you create with them. Those types of issues should be the main focus of your time and attention. However, there are possibly millions of users out there who would love to connect with you, who would love to read your excellent content, and who need the answers you can provide to their questions. Those people will very likely perform a search at their favorite search engine (which is probably Google), and if your site doesn't rank well for their search term (even if your site has the very BEST content for that query), those users will never have the chance to connect with you.
